My Stack the deck Pine tree quilt blocks

Becky's Stack the Deck pine tree blocks.

You will need 10" squares of green fabrics, 9" square newspapers, a 10-12" square of cardboard, and your usual quilting supplies.
Using 10" squares makes a block approximately 8-9" . The hanging ornament was made with 5" squares. The newspaper is for designing your block. It is smaller to help you remember not to go too near the edges.
1.  Fold the newspaper in half vertically.

2. Draw a horizontal line 1-3" from the bottom.
3. Put a dot on the fold at least 1" from the top (A).
4. Mark B and C along your horizontal line. For a symmetrical tree make A & B the same distance from the fold.
5.  draw a line from C through A to edge of paper, another line from B to A & number your newspaper as in photo.
6. Stack a deck of 6 (8 or 10) 10" squares, alternating lights & darks with right sides facing up.
7. Center your paper on top of stack and cut along your horizontal line.
8. Move the bottom stack away from the top, cut it along the fold, and place pieces 4 & 5 on your cardboard.
9. cut from C through A to edge of stack & place on your cardboard.

10. Now cut A to B & place on cardboard.
11.  Take the top fabric of piece 2 & put it on the bottom of the deck.
12. sew #1 to #2, press towards #1 & trim to make even.

13. Sew #1 & 2 to #3, press towards 3 and trim bottom.
14. Cut a piece of brown 1-2" wide for trunk & sew between #4 & #5. trim top if necessary.
15. Sew bottom to top section, centering trunk.

16. When you have made all your blocks, determine the largest square that you can cut on your smallest block (will probably be somewhere between 8 & 9") & trim all blocks to that size. You can set your blocks straight or use sashing between them. It's more interesting if you have skinny & fat short & tall trees, so make each deck different.
